The Latitude D400 makes a great impression with its slim design, which is only an inch thick. The D800 chassis is made from Dell's "Tri-Metal" — a blend of aluminum, magnesium alloy, and steel. It is a reasonably-attractive machine with Moonlight Silver color casing with Ion silver and midnight gray accents. The Tri-Metal Construction has been infused into the Latitude D-Series to allow it to withstand the rigors of corporate life. Because of its compact size, the Latitude D400 is available only with a 12.1-inch display. We found the screen, especially at its native 1,024x768 resolution, to be bright and crisp, especially for an ultraportable notebook. The D400 also incorporates the Intel® 855GM chipset, which offers integrated graphics capability and USB 2.0 support. The integrated graphics utilizes the system memory as a shared resource for both system memory and graphics needs, dynamically allocating a portion of the memory to graphics based on the graphic demands of the applications currently in use. Up to 64MB of memory can be allocated to graphics, and with integrated video acceleration, you can view high quality, full frame rate DVDs on your notebook or connected external display with exceptionally low power consumption.

The Dell Latitude D400 features the Centrino setup -meaning it includes an Intel Pentium M processor, the 855 chipset, and Intel's own 802.11b/g Pro/wireless card. The Intel Pentium M processors, utilize a new micro-architecture incorporating a power-optimized 400MHz processor system bus and aggressive clock gating designed for high performance & low power. These processors also feature enhanced Intel SpeedStep® Technology. The Latitude D400 also includes an integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet port, as well as a 56Kbps V.92 modem.
