The Inspiron line is marketed as their consumer notebook line while The Latitude is positioned as Dell's business machine. As such, component and driver stability over the life of the model line are emphasized over the latest and greatest hardware and drivers. The Latitude is all about stability and manageability... ![]() The revised 4.67pound thin-and-light Dell Latitude D610, looks nearly indistinguishable from the Latitude D600 model that it replaces. Like all Dell D-Series laptops the chassis is made from Dell's "Tri-Metal" — a blend of aluminum, magnesium alloy, and steel. It is a reasonably-attractive machine with Moonlight Silver color casing with Ion silver and midnight gray accents. The Tri-Metal Construction has been infused into the Latitude D-Series to allow it to withstand the rigors of corporate life. For instance, the LCD display backing is made of aluminium material(Not Plastic); and a new magnesium alloy frame is now used inside the notebook to offer better structural rigidity. A Dell executive recently demonstrated stepping on his fully working Latitude guinea pig -> The laptop not only survived, but work as per normal as well. In a nutshell, there's really nothing much to fault on the overall built and form-factor of the D-series laptops. See it for yourself <click here> ![]() Dell has given makeovers to the principal models in its lineup of Latitude business laptops. The most noteworthy new Latitude D610 component is the advantage of Intel's new Sonoma Platform and Alviso chipset, the 915GM/PM, this next-generation of Centrino technology represents a big step forward in performance and battery life. The new Sonoma platform increases the CPU's front side bus (FSB) now clocked at 133 MHz which is a 33% increase over the first generation Centrino. In theory, users should expect accelerated data processing and performance. The first major improvement is the PCI Express bus, which not only allows for a higher data throughput, but is also bidirectional, meaning it can transfer data both to and from a PCIe card at the same time. Dual channel memory architecture really speed things up when writing contents of the RAM to the harddrive and the 533-MHz front side bus (FSB) is 33 percent faster than previous Pentium M systems. ![]() Another big advantage of the Alviso chipset is it able to take advantage of DDR2 memory technology, which doubles the clock speeds of DDR SDRAM. A stick of 400-MHz in DDR2 runs at 800 MHz, which helps satisfy in the inner speed demon in us. Combined with a 1.6-GHz Intel Pentium M 730 the system is significantly faster than older Centrino notebooks, as it posted an outstanding MobileMark score of 210...running a simple application that times how long it takes the processor to calcuate Pi to 2-million digits of accuracy does give away the fact the Intel Pentium M 730 is faster than the Intel Pentium M 725.Here are the results of the IBM ThinkPad T40 (with 1.60GHz Intel Pentium M 725) versus the Dell with 1.60GHz Intel Pentium M 730. IBM ThinkPad T40 (Intel Pentium M 725): 2m23s (143s) Dell Inspiron D610(Intel Pentium M 730): 2m6s (126s) Do the math 100.00 - 100.00 * (126 / 143) = +11.89% difference Dell has improved on USB port availability in an era where users are relying more and more USB volumes and media, so they have built the D610 with four USB ports, two on the right side for quick access and two on the back. Dell smartly placed the USB ports towards the back, where peripherals plugged into these ports will not interfere with your mouse-toting right hand. On the back of these machines you will find the power, monitor, 9-Pin serial Port, parallel, LAN, modem, and S-video Out Ports. Though not many people use legacy posrts anymore, it is nice to know that Dell actually cares about backwards-compatibility. The latter "Legacy Ports" represents a nod to Dell's long-standing corporate customers who may still use old peripherals based on serial port technology and the parallel port is a life saver when you run out of ink on the inkjet and have rely on your parallel-connect LaserJet II to finish a paper. ![]() One thing often overlooked when evaluating the battery on a notebook computer is its charge time. For people on the go, access to power outlets are few and far between, and when there is one available the user may not have much time on it before he/she must get moving again. Quick charge times are therefore essential to maintain the freedom of not having to tie yourself to an outlet during the work day. Dell's Quickcharge allows its main battery charges in about an hour which is half the time of most systems. The Latitude D610 is designed for customers looking for a durable notebook offering the ideal blend features and serious mobile performance. The D610 delivers all the performance you need - incorporating a 14.1-inch screen with a wide 130-degree viewing angle, an internal DvD-CD-Writer Combo Drive, Intel Pro Wireless Lan 2200BG and Intel's latest-generation Centrino Sonoma platform. It's also fairly light (4.7 pounds) and has very good battery life (3.5 hours)—a winning combination for busy road warriors.<click here> DELL LATITUDE D610 for complete specs <click here> and <click here> Intel(R) Pentium(R) M 730 Processor Centrino Technology 1.6GHz, 533MHz FSB, 2MB Cache - Latest Intel(R) 915GM/PM Chipset for more information on Intel's Sonoma Platform <click here> RAM: 1024mb DDR2@533MHz (2 x 512mb) - for more information about the latest DDR2 memory <click here> - Maximum of 2Gb RAM HARDDRIVE: 80GB 4200RPM Ultra ATA ![]() DISPLAY: 14.1" XGA (1024 x 768) TFT <click here> - 128mb Intel 910GMA integrated 3D Graphics(Shared) ![]() OPTICAL DRIVE: DVD±WRITER Combo Drive - 4xDvD-Rw/24x/10x/24x CD Burner and 8x DVD-ROM ![]() Communications: - 10/100 LAN Ethernet integrated - 56Kbps V.92 Fax Modem - 802.11b/g Wireless LAN ![]() Expansion Slots: - 4-USB 2.0 (Universal Serial Bus) - Flash Memory Slot - Secure Digital (SD) SD/IO compliant - Video: 15-pin monitor connector - S-Video: 7-pin mini-DIN connector - Type II PC Card Slot - S-Video TV-Out Dimensions: - Height: 1.52" (38.7 mm) - Width: 14.02" (356 mm) - Depth: 10.45" (265.5 mm) - Weight: 6.65 lbs.1 (3.01kg) Licensed Microsoft Windows XP-Professional + Driver Recovery CD <click here> <click here>![]() Cash Price - check payment subject to clearing.
