Who offered the first netbook for sale in the Philippines? We believe CoolTOYZ did when we brought in the Asus EEE(701) PC direct from the Taiwan trade show <click here>. But we have to make it clear we are not a big seller of netbooks; rather than offer each and every model of netbook available, we select only those that offer unique technology that will benefit the users. We believe the S10-3T with the touchscreen display is one of those offering that provides innovation that benefits the users.



Who says you have to pick between a netbook and a standalone tablet devices? Okay maybe some (eh hem Apple), but Lenovo is offering it both ways with S10-3T. In laptop/clamshell mode the S10-3t looks like any old 10-inch netbook, but swivel around its capacitive multitouch display and it turns into that slate device you've been dreaming of. A number of professional review sites have stated that, the IdeaPad S10-3T can answer Apple iPad weaknesses such as: problems with Flash, memory card slot, and a physical keyboard you can use in your lap. It is our opinion, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t will redefine netbooks!

The S10-3t feels surprisingly solid and sturdy for such an inexpensive hybrid device; and manages to look gorgeous, with its glossy black bezel/lid and white keyboard. The two-tone Cosmic Night design is attractive, with a retro concentric square pattern on both the black lid and the deck. It is very difficult to describe the appeal of the finish and for lack of words we quote respected netbook reviewer/blogger Yugatech that "Lenovo’s got one of the most good-looking tablet netbooks to date. The IdeaPad S10-3t combines a light weight and small netbook form factor" <click here> and the performance of the new Intel Atom N470(1.83) processor at an affordable price.



The IdeaPad is one of a new breed of convertible netbooks. That means you get all the functionality of a traditional notebook, plus the advantages of a touchscreen tablet, for the price of a netbook. Actually, the ‘t’ in the model number is derived from "Tablet" as this 10-inch netbook features a LED touchscreen display that can be rotated 180 degrees and folded down over the keyboard for use in tablet mode. The 1024 x 600 resolution is actually ideal for the 10.1-inch display – desktop icons are large enough to select with a light finger tap.

Previously, tablet PCs were created with a resistive touchscreen, the user must press firmly on the screen with the stylus or control it. In contrast the S10-3T has a capacitive display, meaning the screen operates a little like viewing on an iPhone and works just fine with multiple finger gestures [example two fingers on the screen to scroll down the length of web pages or pinching to make text larger]. Lenovo doesn't include a stylus, so if you want to take advantage of Windows 7's handwriting functionality you're going to need to come up with one of your own. As soon as you swing the display around using the S10-3t's fairly sturdy, bidirectional hinge, Lenovo's Natural Touch interface launches [Go to Start>Programs>Lenovo>Lenono Screen Rotation>Screen Rotation Settings]. The full screen finger-friendly carousel interface provides large shortcuts to Lenovo's own photo, music and e-book software. There is also an e-book software does open PDF or e-pub files and adds note taking and bookmark functions. In the tablet mode, the S10-3t has a dedicated button on the left side of the panel that allows you to switch the screen orientation (at 90, 180, 270 and 360 degrees). That is paired with two more buttons for sound mute and another one for launching the custom UI. The extra bezel space on the side provides better grip in portrait mode. The right side of the bezel houses the webcam, power button, and a lock switch that locks all the buttons (good for when you don't want to accidentally activate anything.)



One of the biggest benefits of the convertible form factor is having access to a full size, physical keyboard. While not 100% sized like in regular laptops, the keyboard on the S10-3T is surprisingly comfortable to use and offers a good feel. This is important specially for those who will be using this netbook as a college companion for research and reports, and of course YM chat and facebook. One design matter that you will need to get used to is that the left and right clickers were removed and are now integrated into the trackpad (similar to what Apple did with the new Macbooks). However, with the reduced area of the trackpad and the clickers integrated into it, the usability has been affected. Then again an external mouse would be best to remedy this.

The Lenovo S10-3T offers plenty of innovative features but unfortunately the 4-cell battery only lasted 140minutes on USB DvD Playback, and close to three and a half hours of battery life when used without an optical drive. This is disappointing because netbooks now provide up to 10hours of battery endurance. We wish Lenovo offered the higher capacity 6-cell battery but maybe to cut cost only the 4-cell variant is available in the local market.



There’s a lot to like about the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3T. It's fairly light for a convertible, offers accurate touch input, and it has a comfortable keyboard. But the without denying what makes the S10-3T most interesting is the tablet form factor and multi-touch screen. The remaining question is why would you want a convertible netbook? Based on actual testing the tablet features becomes most useful when you do not have a table available. Imagine watching a movie in tablet mode while on your Bed (I used a memory card to store the movie), or using the touchscreen to navigate through websites(cool) and even harvest farmville using your fingers, in a coffeshop without a table. The ability to swivel your screen without turning the netbook is also a big plus not to mention the way your friends react is unforgettable! If you love the convenience of your i-phone and want the same convenience on a netbook, the S10-3T is available at a very affordable price!
